In a recent speech a local Baltimore politician said although this country is a melting pot, a stew of cultures. He feels that if you come here to live you should learn the language. So my fellow forum mates. I bring you this to debate ... you come to America ... should you be required to learn the language? Should this country be officially multi-lingual?

I think so too, if your going to live here you need to learn English, my grand father didn't speak english when he first came here from Italy but had to learn it.
This country is a melting pot, and every immigrant who came here, with the exception of those coming from English speaking countrys,, learned the language, and followed their american dreams,, we here at the forum all are products of those who learned the language,, now I think it is important to keep your family history and culture alive,, I think that a country with thousands of different languages,, just becomes like the tower of babble,,, it will fall,, so I do believe that All Americans should speak english,
